More than fantasy, “making dreams” is about dreaming and implementation. This action encourages people and gives them hopes in daily scenarios, trivial and grandiose alike. One way of making dreams, or creative art, inspires more imaginations. Miniature sculptures use materials to implement creative ideas, and highlight the realistic aspect of making dreams.
“Daily” refers to individual or collective life experiences that continue to happen. The flow of time is both a status and a scenario. Dreams come from daily life. Miniature sculpture creators transform daily experiences into objects with unique skills to make dreams. It’s also a daily scenario for creators to make artistic dreams continuously. Miniature sculptures present dream worlds in a microscopic manner.
Miniature sculptures originate in early 1980s from the shoebox concept proposed by University of Hawaii sculpture professor Mamoru Sato and Fred Roster. It refers to small-scale sculptures that can be contained in a shoebox. The reference scales in this exhibition is 30.5x22.5x12.5cm. Unlike traditional sculptures require time-consuming transportation, expensive production costs, and large exhibition spaces, miniature sculptures have fewer considerations on structural supports. These works more directly present creative ideas. Easier transportation and lower costs enable more connections with cultural and creative industry.
This exhibition includes sculptures from sculpture professors in Japan and China, as well as from professors and students in Department of Sculpture, National Taiwan University of Arts. This exhibition presents how miniature sculptures form from imagination, and features with stone, wood, metal and mixed media. Four subjects, MicroscopicScene, Contextual Snapshot, Self-Dialectic, and Extended Topics, include diverse and enriching imaginations ondaily life from local and international creators. Miniature sculptures drawviewers closer to numerous perspectives included in these imaginary worlds. These fascinating and profound aspects in daily experiences will lead viewerson their journeys to dreams.
